Man accused of stalking Charlotte women was subject of restraining order filed by John Mayer

Seven-time Grammy award winner John Mayer was granted a temporary restraining order in 2019 against a man who several women in Charlotte claim has been stalking them, Channel 9 learned Tuesday.

According to court documents filed in California in August 2019, Ryan Knight harassed, stalked and physically threatened Mayer as well as people who work with the singer. Documents also claim Knight made references about notorious serial killers and sent social media messages including, “you step from me again and I will kill you” and “I’m everywhere like God.”

Through social media, Mayer alleges Knight sent anti-Semitic and racist messages to him, such as “I’ve put many a Jew in the hospital.”

According to court documents, Knight initially presented himself as a fan in March 2019, but grew more aggressive over time. In June 2019, Mayer came in contact with Knight when the musician was scheduled to perform in North Carolina.

Documents allege Knight was seen in a parking lot across from the venue and tried to drive into the parking area. Knight was then stopped by authorities and told not to return. Channel 9 learned Mayer was playing with Dead & Company at PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte at the time.

After Mayer claimed Knight caused him emotional distress, a Los Angeles County judge issued a temporary restraining order against Knight in October 2019 for five years.

Channel 9 reached out to Mayer’s attorney for comment regarding Knight’s recent charges in Charlotte and he shared a statement saying, “my concern remains focused on the continued safety and well-being of my client.”

On Monday, Channel 9 reported that a south Charlotte community was on edge after several women said Knight had been stalking them.

The district attorney said they have received multiple complaints about Knight. He has been ordered to stay away from a neighborhood in Madison Park after a hearing Monday in the Mecklenburg County Courthouse, where he faces multiple charges.

We spoke with Knight’s parents outside the courtroom. They said Knight has a mental disability and would never hurt anyone. They say he needs help and not jail.
